Connectivity between the Northern Territory and Southeast Asia has taken a significant step forward with AirAsia Malaysia commencing direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Darwin.
The inaugural service touched down at Darwin International Airport on 27 June 2025.
Operating four return flights per week, the Kuala Lumpur–Darwin route will deliver more than 1400 seats weekly, providing the only direct and affordable link between Darwin and the Malaysian capital. Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia’s major air travel hubs, offering seamless access to over 130 destinations across the AirAsia network.
The new route is expected to drive growth across tourism, trade, education and investment sectors, reinforcing Darwin’s position as a vital gateway between Australia and Asia.
To coincide with the launch, Tourism NT is to roll out a major campaign in Malaysia — Darwin’s a Darling with Captain Snappy — aimed at enticing more Southeast Asian travellers to explore the Territory.
