Role of the Territory Coordinator
The Territory Coordinator is an independent statutory officer who plays a central role in facilitating and accelerating the delivery of transformative developments and significant projects that drive economic growth, create jobs, attract private investment, and grow the Northern Territory’s population.
Acting as a key link between government, industry, and communities, the TC supports the delivery of key projects by enabling the designation of infrastructure coordination areas and Territory development areas, streamlining statutory processes and decisions.
The Territory Coordinator’s role ensures these projects are prioritised and supported effectively. This reduces bureaucratic delays for complex projects that are economically or regionally significant.
The Territory Coordinator’s responsibilities involve:
- Coordinating complex projects, making it easier for private sector investors to bring big ideas to life.
- Streamlining approvals across government, delivering significant projects sooner.
- Ensuring the NT remains competitive in attracting and securing significant private investment
Primary principle
The Territory Coordinator or Minister for Territory Coordinator must consider the primary objective of driving economic development, and the potential social and environmental outcomes, when exercising key powers under the Act.
Key powers include making or varying designations, declarations, plans, and approvals under specific sections of the Act, issuing certain requests or notices, and acting under a step-in notice.
When exercising a power under any other Act (such as stepping-in), the Minister or Territory Coordinator must have regard to the relevant objects, principles or considerations under the other Act, but to the extent of any inconsistency with the Primary Principle.
