Gas production in the Northern Territory’s Beetaloo Basin is a step closer following the signing of an historic agreement with traditional owners.
Native title holders and the Northern Land Council have signed an agreement with Tamboran Resources to sell up to 60 terajoules a day over a three-year period from its Shenandoah South Pilot Project’s exploration wells.
Under existing arrangements, the Northern Territory Government will purchase a portion of the appraisal gas for domestic energy supply.
The agreement is intended to support near-term production while laying the foundation for expanded gas development from the Beetaloo Basin in future years. It also includes measures to deliver economic and social benefits to local communities, including training, employment, and business participation opportunities associated with the project’s development.
First gas from the Shenandoah South Pilot Project is expected in mid-2026, subject to final approvals. These initial sales are expected to provide early revenue and assist in confirming the basin’s commercial potential.
The Beetaloo Basin, located 500 kilometres south of Darwin and roughly the size of Belgium, is considered one of Australia’s most significant onshore gas resources. Industry analysts suggest it may hold sufficient reserves to meet Australia’s domestic gas needs for more than 200 years.
