About the Territory Coordinator

The Territory Coordinator is an independent statutory officer with extensive powers to plan and support the progression of complex projects and developments to drive economic growth in the Northern Territory.

The Territory Coordinator works closely with regulatory and industry-focussed agencies so that projects meet necessary requirements without avoidable delays.

Stuart Knowles commenced as the inaugural Territory Coordinator in May 2025.

With a distinguished career spanning both private and public sectors, Mr Knowles brings extensive executive level experience and deep local knowledge to this important position.

Prior to his appointment as Territory Coordinator, Mr Knowles held the position of General Manager for the Northern Territory at INPEX’s LNG project in Darwin, where he played a key role in overseeing one of the Territory’s most significant economic contributors. His tenure at INPEX, Japan’s largest oil and gas company, saw him lead efforts toward decarbonisation and manage regulatory compliance and approvals, cementing his reputation as a seasoned industry leader.

Reporting directly to the Minister for Territory Coordinator, Mr Knowles’ appointment as Territory Coordinator reflects his ability to bridge industry and government - a critical asset in a role designed to enable private investment and enhance the Territory’s economic competitiveness.
